Housebreaking Your New Puppy

Housebreaking your new puppy need not break you.  With Patience, diligence and a calm.
Authoritative manner, you can teach your dog exactly where he/her should eliminate and
where he/she should not
.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

BUY A WIRE CRATE BUT NOT TO BIG AS TO GIVE THE PUPPY ROOM TO ELIMINATE IN
ONE END AND SLEEP IN THE OTHER. ( You can buy a bigger crate with a divider in it this
way it can grow as the puppy grows)  KEEP YOUR PUPPY IN IT WHENEVER YOU ARE
NOT PLAYING, HOLDING, OR WATCHING HIM EXPLORE HIS NEW SURROUNDINGS. IN
ADDITION TO PROVIDING THE SAFE, SECURE REFUGE YOUR DOG NEEDS AND
WANTS, CRATES ARE CRITICAL TO HOUSE TRAINING BECAUSE AS DEN ANIMALS,
DOGS ARE NATURALLY INCLINED TO NOT SOIL THEIR BED.

1.The key to success is simple: Timing is everything.

2.Take your puppy outside immediately after eating, playing or napping (approximately every
two hours).  Keeping this rigid schedule will prevent him/her from making mistakes in the
house.

3. Some trainers recommend giving your dog a command like “potty time!” or “Let’s go
Potty! at the moment your pup is correctly doing his business outside.  Eventually, whenever
you say that phrase, the dog will eliminate on cue.

4. Much like a little child who dances up and down when they have to go to the bathroom, a
puppy’s behavior will let you know that he needs to go outside.  If he whines, paces or runs
in a circle, grab the leash and get out the door.

5. Mistakes happen. If you catch your puppy eliminating in the house and he will, correct
him  with a firm but gentle “No”. Take him for a walk and praise him lavishly when he does his
business outside.

FACT:     Keep this number in mind – 15-minutes after your puppy eats, plays vigorously, he
will need to eliminate.  As he gets older, he will be able to wait longer.  An adult
dog eliminates 3 to 4 times a day and will learn to hold it – within reason.

Tip:         Always feed and water your puppy at the same time every day.  If he eats at
regular intervals, he will relieve himself at regular intervals too.
